Hand Rankings in Poker
Here is the ranking of hands for a standard poker game
1. Royal Flush: The best hand in Poker consisiting of the Ace,
Kinq, Queen, Jack, Ten of the same suit. All royal flushes are equal, so a pot
would be chopped if 2 people hold them.
2. Straight Flush: Any 5 consecutive cards that are of the same
suit (e.g 5 6 7 8 9 and all diamonds). If two people hold staright flushes the
one with the highest card would win the pot (e.g. a straight flush of 5 6 7 8
9 would lose to a straight flush of 6 7 8 9 10).
3. 4 of a Kind: 4 cards of the the same rank (e.g. Ace of
diamonds, Ace of clubs, Ace of spade, Ace of hearts). If two players hold a 4
of a kind the higher 4 of a kind would win (e.g. 4 Queens would lose to 4
Kings or 4 Aces).
4. Full House: Consists of 3 cards of one rank and 2 cards of
another rank (e.g. Ace Ace Ace King King). If two players hold full houses the
on with the higest ranking set of three cards would be the winner (e.g. Ace
Ace Ace 2 2 would beat King King King Queen Queen). Also if the same set of
three cards is used then the player with the highest pair would win (this
would only occur in games with community cards are being used).
5. Flush: Five cards of the same suit, these cards do not have
to be sequential. If two players hold flushes the player with the highest card
would win the pot. if the players have the same highest card you would move to
the 2nd highest card and so on.
6. Straight: Any 5 sequential cards in order (e.g. 3 4 5 6 7),
suit does not matter for straights. also ace plays as high and low so a
staright can be made with Ace King Queen Jack Ten or Ace 2 3 4 5. If two
people hold straights the player with the higher straight will win.
7. Three of a Kind: Any 3 cards of the same rank. If two
players have three of a kind the higher 3 of a kind wins.
8. Two Pair: A pair is 2 cards of the same rank, so two pair
is two seperate pairs of cards of different rank (e.g. Ace 4 4 5 5 ). If two
people have 2 pair the player with the highest pair wins the hand (e.g. 4 5 5
Ace Ace would beat Ace King King Queen Queen).
9. Pair: 2 cards of the same rank. If two players are holding
a pair the higher pair would win the pot.
10. High Card: If no one holds a pair or better the player with
the highest card in their hand wins. Ace is always the highest card.
